Here's the thing, squash plants (most cucurbits actually) don't like being bound. They're very fast growers, and that includes their roots. When you contain them like that when they want to go deeper, you disallow them from finding more nutrients, which they feed HEAVILY on. As such, because you've pot-bound it, it did not have much to feed on, so it's permanently stunted now. Squash are annual growers, not perennial, so once the season is over, it's over for them.
Don't feel so bad about it, though. Mistakes are the path to learning.
