I have quite a few flashlights and lanterns. I have a couple of solar/crank ones from LL Bean that aren't too bright but convenient because if it's dead and if you need light just crank. The maglites are the brightest and really sturdy. The new D cell maglites pretty much turn night into day and are really sturdy.
One I just got and I never hear about on /out/ is the luci light. I got mine a few days ago and I can tell it's going to be good. It packs down very light and compact, holds good charge, and is bright enough to work in. I think they give one to 3rd world people for each one you buy as well which is another nice thing. I got the original. I just played with it around the house but I'd recommend looking into one as they aren't overly expensive and they have so many good points. Only bad one maybe is if you pop it, but then some packing tape should fix it up.
