You don't NEED opaque frames unless you're going to be swimming in murky water or looking under rocks; the clear frames will give you a slight increase in field of vision (it's not very clear but you can see) at the expense of not being able to see under rocks and the possibility of glare. It's mostly personal preference.

If you're going to be freediving you'll probably want a freediving mask (lower mask volume) but I've seen people with scuba masks and old-style 70s bucket masks that freedive just fine, so again personal preference. A purge valve will make clearing your mask easier, but it isn't necessary and sometimes the valve will fail and let water in.

It's a blast. Bit of a learning curve though. Not too bad though.

When you start, start with a polespear so you can learn how to sneak up on fish (you have to get close to them to kill them) because otherwise you won't be as good when you switch to speargun.
