I did some hitchhiking this summer and noted my experience's in my journal

anyway, I also have an-audio report of some guy who hitchhiked the US, which might interest you, it's from some anarchist community radio page, but they keep the political agenda really down on this one, so its worth listening too if you're interested in the subject

the constant waiting, the unsureness whether you will hitch a ride, constantly having to attune yourself to the mentally of every new driver, living on the road etc.
all those things wear you out really quickly
I was pretty much done for mentally after 10 days, but I made a lot of beginner mistakes and I did a route of ~800km by mostly using country roads and getting from village to village
