Generator and 30gal+ of gas never hurt either.
Not gonna lie though, in the future I would love to go with one or those big Generac natural gas backup guys if I could, but besides for that, I could probably do a smaller like 2500w unit. If you want to install a transfer switch and run the whole house, you will need like 10kW and it’s going to run through a lot of gasoline, and storing >50gal of gas in the garage gets tedious, so a smaller 2000W-3000W generator will sip gas comparitively and is enough to keep the fridge cold and charge up all your power banks before you shut it off for a few hours.
I must say though all the people who say gas goes bad after 3mos or whatever are full of shit. In Florida, it’s super easy to find Rec 90 with no ethanol, and there’s tons of Sta-Bil type treatments for regular gas. As long as you shut off the gas line on the generator and run the carb dry, basic 87 octane seems ok for at least a year.
I hate to admit it because it’s partially laziness, but I had 5 year old gas with some Sta-Bil poured in early on and it ran the generator fine and I even ran a lot of it through my car with like 50%+ fresh gas and had zero issues.
