When the miners finished mining the water returned. the water turns the structural timbering into a sponge like consistency. the water also erodes the existing ground. Decaying material due to water does lead to bad air, but the bigger concern for me is the structural integrity. using water to mine such as using a water monitor would be considered strip mining, not underground mining.
