i have been backpacking and ruck marching, since i was 8, all over europe (all of central europe and some of eastern, Finland, Ireland, France and Spain) and some of burgerlands, longest was from Prague to Gerlachov Peak (highest mountain of Slovakia), it's about 400 miles

If you are new to backpacking and/or never was anywhere you don't know, you need pretty solid plan what to do. Plan your trail to last detail, with solid grip of your abilities, dont overestimate how far you think you can get and if you are ready to for living for days in forrests and dont uderestimate terrain you will be walking on. For newcommers it is best to choose some flatlands, dont start in mountains, you wont probably finish yor trail. Begining at smaller tracks (2-3 day) and work your way up, Dont plan week trip at begining, you wont make it. Good idea if you dont want to walk by trail or just wander around the woods is to follow rivers, but be careful you will see most animals close to rivers.

This might be hard for internet tough guys, but its good for your first trips to get at least one person to go with you. If you dont want to for any reasons, it is good to at least tell your friends and/or family where are you going and when you will be back. If you are going for more than 2-3 day trips its good to call your close ones that you are okay once per day. Anything can happen to you and it is good idea to have some backup. Also taking frens with you is good for your sanity.
>get GPS, tourist map, or both
Good GPS will get you trough most of times, but it is electronic, so it can malfunction, so it is best idea to keep backup maps and compass at you all the time and learn how to work with azimuths. Later you will understand you dont really need GPS and only carry maps. Buy waterproof case for your map.
