You can also fish for spots, king fish (often called sea mullet or whiting; northern king fish and southern king fish respectively) croaker, and similar in the first trough with a high low rig (or similar) with 2-4 oz of lead and various baits. Sand fleas, cut squid, bits of shrimp, blood worms, and probably a few things ive forgotten. I personslly really like an 8'6" salmon/steelhead rod for it. Its only rated for up to 1.5 ounces but its fine to lob a 2-4 ounce weight in to the surf. A similar set up would be good for keeping a diamond jig ready to go if bluefish or spanish happened by, but those are both more summer things.
