I don't know anything about sailing beyond extremely cursory knowledge. I'm from a landlocked state and while we have navigable rivers and man made lakes, and plenty of people boat, sailing isn't much of a thing around here, however, for some reason I've had a dream of when I get out of college moving to somewhere like in Michigan, getting some land on the coast of the Great Lakes and taking a sailing trip out of the Bay of Fundy.
New Brunswick was always a favorite vacation destination of my late grandfather and for some reason the idea of sailing has always been appealing to me.
I know there's going to be a learning curve to it, I'd like to start small with a little boat I can crew by myself and some few years down the line get a larger craft, I'm thinking of some kind of motorsailer since they seem to be the closest to a "hybrid" boat you can get, so I have the option of using the inboard or the sails or both at the same time.
My first major voyage I'd like to be as I mentioned, sailing from Lake Michigan up the St Lawrence and around to the Bay of Fundy, either turning around or taking the Hudson back home, but I was also intrigued by the idea of possibly sailing to the Caribbean and even back up the Mississippi to get back home, or even further in the future, to Europe.
Could such an idea be feasible? Would a vessel suitable for making the trip down the St Lawrence also be suitable for making a trip up the Mississippi?
While my first goal is getting some kind of small craft and working my way up to larger boats, it would be nice to know what I need to plan for when I'm finally in a position to look for buying my final boat to take these trips in.
I'd have some more specific questions to ask but I'm more concerned with the general concepts right now, since even buying some lakefront land is still more than a few years away for me.
