The 3 pouches you see on the sides as well as the lid are fully removable with zippers or clips, and each has an opening to the main compartment underneath. Each one is also a small backpack in itself : center pouch has 2 straps for carrying, side pouches have one strap each, like sling packs, and can be zipped together.
There is a non-military version, which is a little bit less huge, and doesn't have the g-82 gun pocket right against your back, that being said, I like having that pocket for my hydration bag. Note that on the military version, you can detach the entire pack from its aluminum frame to use the gun straps for other stuff (in my case, I used it to carry a san pouch and a bulky radio).
