“Checkerboarding” is an issue in some Western states. The land is an alternating patchwork of private and public lots. I think each square is one square mile. Since the public land can’t be accessed without crossing private land, it become de facto privately held. There are hunting clubs and lodges that absolutely exploit this, providing exclusive access to public space.
“Corner crossing” on foot is considered trespassing for some reason. I guess it’s assumed that it’s physically impossible to cross from public land to public land without accidentally stepping foot on private property.
Some hunters used a latter to do it and the land owner took them to court claiming they’d violated his air space. It ended up in federal court and the judge ruled in favor of the hunters, but the fact that we’re even having a conversation about corner crossing and discussing if a latter violates air space shows how far gone the boomer mindset of muh property is.
