Part of my job involves a lot of hiking and backpacking in the summers in the Washington Cascades, particularly around Mt. Baker. I've got plenty of experience and did quite a bit of work out there this summer, but the field season ended for me in late August.
Now my boss wants me to go do a 2-night backpacking trip way up in the mountains to do some last minute work. The vast majority of the hiking is above 5,000 feet, with peak elevation at 6,500 feet. I essentially have 0 snow/cold weather backcountry experience.
What could I expect conditions to be this time of year at those elevations? If there's going to be a lot of snow (I know Baker got a bunch in the last few days), I'm not going to do the hike. I won't risk my life like that. I already had a few close calls with summer snow conditions, and I won't tempt fate by going out when it could actively be accumulating.
Also general PNW fall thread. Thinking about heading down to the Wallowas in north eastern Oregon to get some nice larch action.
