took the kids on a quick /out/ing this morning, pic related.
>>1614921i have a 4 y.o. and a 9 m.o. who have been going /out/ almost their whole lives. it helps to have an /out/ partner; fortunately my wife loves it as much as i do. first, get a GOOD kid carrier backpack and start them in it as soon as they fit so they learn that that's what they do. if you wait too long they'll feel confined, if you start early it will always be a fun ride. you can almost always find nearly new ones used being sold by people who waited 'til their kid was 18 months and wouldn't tolerate it. i have an osprey poco plus i got that way that i love because it holds the kids high enough to see over my shoulders even when they're small, has a great suspension (good for 45-50 lbs), and has 22l of storage for diapers, spare clothes, food, blanket, whatever. my oldest has put literally hundreds of miles in it, up to hikes of 11+ miles. now he hikes while the little one rides. he's good for a few miles at a time. i'm taking him backpacking for the third time next weekend. my 3 tenets of /out/ing with kids are
>patienceyou're moving at their limit of speed/distance/time, not yours
>enthusiasmshare what you love about /out/. make it a game: look for the most acorns, or how far until we find a waterfall, or whatever,
>flexibilityalways be ready to change your plans and adapt to current mood.
>>1614975sorry, i must have missed that one. i always try to be helpful for expectant/new /out/ parents with everything i've picked up.
