>>2400388>Appalachians are very steep, at least the Appalachian Trail is"Very steep" is an exaggeration unless you're talking about the northernmost parts that go through NH and ME.
Most of the Appalachians and AT are only moderately steep compared to the Adirondack High Peaks which have brutally challenging routes that go straight up the mountain and often have slick rock climbs. The standard route up Marcy (VanHo) is considered one of the easiest routes in the high peaks, yet people from out west and other places still get a reality check when they hike it. Someone from Colorado or Washington or California would be in for a real surprise if he attempted a serious mountaineering route like the Saddleback Cliffs, Colden Trap Dike, Gothics Cable Route or Algonquin from Lake Colden thinking the East only has glorified hills. Doubly so if there's inclement weather or dangerous trail conditions.
