I was travelling along highways, so it worked out for me that I needed only to have about 5 litres on me at a time-- I was going through about 3 litres of water between roadhouses/towns/rest areas with tankwater, and the extra 2 litres for 'emergencies', like when I got the flat tire and had to replace the tube in 40C heat on the middle of the Barkly Highway...
