Personally, I usually hike in National Parks or Forests or scenic trails that are popular hiking destinations. They have primitive sights set up near some of the creeks that are cleared for tents, have creek water to filter and permanent fire rings. It negates this whole argument.
If I do camp in the 'wilderness', I'll still have a small fire. I would defy anyone but some mystic professional tracker to identify my campsite after I leave.
