Honestly, Garmin did a really good job with it, combining a decent two-way along with a solid GPS. But you're right, they're fucking proud of them and the price tag reflects that. If you're in the market for both a GPS and decent two-way, they're a good product to consider. If you already have a GPS (or radio) you like, there's cheaper alternatives.
They are, to my knowledge, the _only_ device that brings APRS functionality into a commercial product.
A bunch of guys I go snowmobiling with have them, and yeah, the map feature is really nice when someone gets stuck in the trees. But fuck me sideways that's a lot of money for a GPS-radio.
The 650/655's are the same software design that the 62/78's follow, which I really don't care for, so there's that.
