http://www.greenpete.co.uk/knife-making/knife-making-video/That other anon does have a point about putting a handle on a blank as a first project. It's much easier. Heat treating is a bit of a bitch. I mean, it's easy to do, but can easily go wrong, if you get my meaning.
I really should make a copypasta as I've not the time to write all this stuff down again. Perhaps watch the vids and read a tutorial or two then post up any questions that remain.
(one thing I don't think was mentioned in the greenpete vids is that you should leave at least a half mm thick cutting edge so you don't overheat cutting-sharp steel while heat treating).
