I've built a couple (2) of A-frame cabins, very sturdy, holds heat well. Earth berms are supposedly decent, never tried one, but we've done dugout greenhouses which react similarly as far as heat/cooling goes. Done a traditionally built log cabin at a historical reenactment, quick to build, but not ideal for a home, more like a temporary/vacation shelter.

If I could build my dream home with no budgetary restrictions, I'd purchase and renovate (structural + wind/avalanceproofing) pic related, the power plant above Telluride, Colorado. Access road in the summer, private gondola to the town in the winter. Includes 2MW hydroelectric generator for all your mad science needs.
