Honestly, quads scare the fuck out of me. Minimal skill required to ride one, and because of that you get all the clowns that think a helmet and protective gear is a waste because they have 4 wheels instead of 2.
A little overconfidence, a couple beers (because quads, lol) and a top-heavy vehicle offroad with an unskilled rider on it... they'll fuck you up quick when it rolls over on you, and being as heavy as they are, you can't really right it yourself like with a bike.
They have their purposes for utility ... farm/ranch use, or hunting/access. For recreation, they're gay as aids. Ride a dirt bike instead, they're much more funner.
MX helmet + goggles or safety glasses. I usually wear safety glasses/sunglasses on my moto, goggles if i'm racing or if it's a shitty day out. Dualsport helmet is nice for dualsport riding, rarely wear it offroad.
Good boots (closed-toe, steel/composite toe work boots, or better yet, ATV boots). Gloves. Knee protection is nice to have.
