Omaha native here. There is quite bit to do. Ice fishing is pretty good. Lake Standing Bear is stocked with trout right about now and is good fishing all winter. It also has a nice hiking trail around it and it is in a nice area and nothing stupid happens there. River fishing is great. I like the Elkhorn. Look for a WMA called Catfish run it is a nice place to fish and camp. Almost nobody ever there. Fonetnelle Forest is a nice place to hike and bird watch. Also Hummel Park is awesome to hike year around. There is a ski lodge in Crescent Iowa. Like other said hunting and fishing is good all through the state. Metal detecting is also great with all the old farm sites, the Overland trail, battle sites and the many parks and abandoned school house sites.
