Dapping with a pole, even an improvised pole, is the best option in some situations, and is at minimum adequate for catching panfish in almost any situation.
Cane poles even have unique advantages, but apparently no one on this board uses them and won't seriously consider using them. Picrel was me hiking through National Forest backcountry last fall (the "trail" you see was a logging road that's been closed for nearly a century, and isn't listed or maintained) with one of my shorter cane poles and a Suntech Kurenai HM30R telescopic seiryu rod.
Later on that day, I used them to catch a whole mess of native brookies and a few native suckers as well.
