Pace cord on my shoulder straps of my stuff. Lack of a pace cord? carry a stick, snap off bits every 100m and stuff them in a pocket. Rocks, etc. Not hard to figure out a reliable method of counting pace for long distances doing navigation.
GPS'es are best for telling you where you are. Next best, telling you the surrounding terrain provided you have maps installed/mapping types. Last thing they're any good at is foot navigation, honestly. If anything, use it to tell you where you are and what azimuth you should follow to get to where you want to be, then as a spot check as to where you think you are through pace/azimuth/terrain association/altitude compared to where the GPS gods say you are.
Doing it that way also conserves batteries as well.
