What got me my first carp on the fly was a fly I tied myself called the backwards but. If you see them cruising, or sunning themselves, ignore them. You're looking for a fish that's actively feeding. Theyll usually be kicking up a cloud of mud, and sometimes theyll be tailing. Make a cast 2-3 feet in front of the carp, and 1-2 feet past it. Drag your fly oh so slowly. If you can see the fly, watch for the eat. If you cant see the fly, watch for the carp to swim over and your fly line to hesitate. When you see that hesitation, strip set. The strip set gives better hook penetration and is less likely to spook the fish if he doesnt have the fly in his mouth.
