This is the McKenzie basin, on the south island of new Zealand. It is (was) an alpine desert with unique flora and fauna.
The green round circles are pasture growth, fed from irrigation towers. Farmers are turning large areas of the environment into grazing land.
This is a double ecological disaster since it not only wrecks the ecosystem of the basin, but also draws water from surrounding systems, increasing decertification (but not in ways that will support the kind of biodiversity the basin holds)
