Honestly a big consideration probably should be geography. In areas with plenty of woods and hills, 10 miles is a long fucking distance that aside from major roads and highways, you cannot travel in a straight path from point A to point B. Its not like certain states where you can see for miles and miles because there is nothing obscuring your view.
In that same line of thinking, while a place like Humboldt County, CA has a denisty of 35 ppl/ sq mi you would have a shit ton more privacy from your neighbors there in terms of visibility than you would in Amarillo, TX.
