A laymans definition off the top of my head would be trees and shrubs, with long needle like leaves, evergreen, conical-particularly in youth, they tend to favour subarctic and temperate zones, and reproduce via cones.
One can find examples that break all of these definitions, but as a basic idea of what a conifer is, I think it is okay.
