The whole 'van life' thing is a phase that will become uninteresting about three months in. It can definitely be fun so I still recommend people give it a shot but just be mindful of the fact that you'll most likely be trying to sell your purchase down the road.
SO, you should definitely not buy anything specialized like a built out camper van or a camper trailer or any of these things which are largely useless on the secondary market. What you want is a generic cargo van with a fairly minimal buildout inside (wooden bedframe, table, light electronics setup, etc...). Don't go cutting holes in the roof and shit for ventilation or solar; it's all a meme that will hurt your re-sale value and cost you money. The idea is to be able to rip all this shit out in a day so you can sell your cargo van and get out of the sport with little to no loss. Cargo vans hold their value incredibly well; they are so well commoditized that you can sell these things sight unseen at market rate within seconds.
