This goes for all niche interests, not just camping
>4chan: Good for banter, memes, fun etc. One of the only places on the internet a person can just "hang out" and chat about nonsense or express nonstandard opinions. OK for serious discussion but you have to sift through a mountain of silly shit. Occasionally you'll come across top tier hidden gem posts that you genuinely can't find anywhere else on the internet.
>Reddit: Fantastic if you want crowdsourced answers on noncontroversial subjects. If you want to ask some random question about gardening for example, the top reply is likely going to be some long answer from a guy who actually does it and really wants to help you. Complete garbage if you want to discuss anything even remotely controversial or have any kind of fun because groupthink permeates every corner of the site and anyone who deviates from the standard Reddit mindset gets downvoted and shunned to oblivion by smarmy, self righteous faggots.
>Traditional forums (with logins/usernames and such): All complete garbage packed with losers that take their e-rep too seriously, autistic mods that are 1000x worse than jannies and high school tier drama. Some of the more serious ones are acceptable for discussion but they're super dry and boring. Basically you just ask your questions, get a few answers from experts and log off.
>Social Media: Kind of useless unless you plan on finding people to meet IRL. You're either chatting with your existing friend circle or chatting with bots/noobs/retards in public groups and such.
There is no "good" forum on the internet that's free and casual like 4chan but with a higher level of discourse, this is pretty much it.
