I work for my state government as a gasline inspector. I drive around and basically supervise construction sites, and inspect existing, accessible structures (e.g. meters). I'm "on call" for incidents and shit, which happens like once a month. Other than that, the hours are basically 9-5, and most of my work is obviously outside. Also, since I'm just an inspector, I don't have to do anything dangerous. The only downside is that I live in a very large state (won't say which) so a lot of the time is spent driving.
Any science degree will do. The other inspectors I work with have bachelors in engineering, only one of them went for a PE, none of us bothered with grad school.
