I agree with you that people tend to focus too much on the horticulture aspect of homesteading on this board as opposed to other vital aspects such as off grid power, home construction, and alternative income sources (this one is a big).
A lot of homesteading has to do with the region / biome you plan on living in. ie: solar panels are perfect for Utah, but would not be as effective in Western Washington. On the flip side, one who is offgrid might have issues collecting water in Utah, but have no problems at all with rain collecting in Western Washington. What kind of place do you plan to homestead in? I only know about the US in terms of the laws, so if you are a European I cannot talk as much on the subject.
