If you don't want to fuck around weaving, a hat can simply be fashioned by pressing overlapping leaves (green ones work) between hoops.
Often in the jungle people would put plastic bags layered under the leaves. For some reason insects don't like them.
The same principle can easily be applied to synthetic materials and is best combines with a cloth wrap/bandana to protect your neck.
I once totally scared the shit out of some people because I was peeing by the trail (yes I know this is bad) and some people walked past without hearing me, and I came back to the path behind them in a large green leaf hat I just made for fun.
