I couldn't think of a way to use just any log and have a wedge clamp. lol Since you have an auger, there's also another style of clamp you can use which may or may not work for your needs. They are called, "bench dogs" and look like this. You'd only need to drill 1 hole then drop in an upside-down Y-branch from a tree which has one long part and a short part that comes down on the workpeice. I've used them for other things, but not for shaving a bow down. Drilling less holes may be appealing.
