say "hi there!" or "how's it going?" or wave, smile and keep walking if you dont wanna talk...
The only time I might stop and talk is if I have made a camp near someone or can help in some way. I think it's a little rude to camp near someone and not at least introduce yourself. Don't want to seem creepy.
That's pretty much your only obligation. Greet them and talk, just long enough not to seen weird and creepy.
