Millenia ago If you were sick of society you could simply just go out and survive in the wilderness. Nowadays if you do that will be arrested and charged with a multitude of crimes culminating in your indefinite confinement. Global overpopulation has gotten so bad that the only sparsely inhabited land left is either too cold, hot, dry, wet, mountainous, too policed or just farmland leaving those who want to escape from the cold grips of the system left with nothing. Freedom cannot exist in a world where escape from civilization in the pursuit of self determination is impossible.
