As has been mentioned 1000x in thread, DEET is the best known repellent, in really bad areas you can up the concentration if you know how to make it, the chemistry is on the internets, you mix with water to reduce from pure. Also works somewhat on ticks so put on your boots and anything that touches the bush if in tick country.
They home in on CO2 being expelled from your breath and them zero in on body heat when close enough, the hotter you get, the more attractive you will appear.
