The mountains stop about 1200 miles east of the Pacific coast, and the amount of mountainous land area east of the Rockies is 1/5th that of the mountain land area west of the Front Range. That is to say about 80-90% of the mountainous land area of the United States is west of the Rockies (including the Rockies as well). Only about 1/4th to 1/3rd of the US is mountainous as a result. Canada contains a slightly lower mountainous land area than even the US, while mexico is about as mountainous as the western US in ratio (both due to the North American Cordillera).
