And if you do that in a foreign country, you'll realize that it's the best way to get into trouble with the police and army, as it is a very American thing for a civilian to use military gear.
It's not only about the color either, but about the shape and looks too. A regular hiking pack in black, green or tan color will still look like a hiking pack, when something covered with useless MOLLE is going to shout "military" to anyone that sees it, even in navy blue or grey.
Still, not all hiking packs are neon green and orange, the one in the picture I posted is a great example, it's not an overly bright red, and there's black and brown too, plus it looks like an actual hiking pack. My own backpack is pic related, that's not neon colors either. That applies to clothing aswell, brands know full well that while some people prefer very bright colors to be easily spotted in the event of an emergency, but then many don't want to look like walking road signs either.
