What's the bottleneck in fly casting? That is to say, what's the biggest thing (in terms of quality of the item) holding the cast from going farther for any given line wt.? Is it the fly line, the tapered leader, or the rod?
I've been using a martin fly fishing outfit (5wt) that I picked up a while back, and the casting sweet spot where everything just casts nice and smooth is about 15ft. Which is not bad in some places that I fish. With roll casting I can push the line out to a little over 20ft, at which point it becomes really difficult to transfer energy from the roll any further.
So my initial question is because I want to stick with 5wt or possibly step down to 4wt, and was wondering whether it is possible to get better distance from these line weights by buying a better fly line, leader, or rod.
Pic partially related. Caught this big guy with 1/64oz trout magnet jighead that I can cast out to 30+ft EASILY with nanofil line. I wish I could cast fly line out that far just as easily.
