To bring this back on topic. I went to Grand escalante over the summer and had a great time. It is very remote but open. Its not like you can 4 wheel wherever you want but you shouldn't be able to do that anyways because it tears up so much stuff. The established roads there still require a good amount of 4wd driving skills, especially when going through and down washes, or even getting to some trailheads. You can hike where ever you want basically but walking through desert for 40 miles without any trees or water isn't exactly a bright idea or fun time. There plenty of private roads and property on it but you can basically go wherever you want.
