Depending on the situation I might consider bringing two knives, one to beat on and one to keep razor sharp instead of bringing a sharpening kit but then again you arent going to be getting back to a mirror polished and lapped edge out in the woods with significant kit anyways. There are plenty of reasons I would consider bringing a very sharp hard knife, cutting meat would be a good application.
Bring two izulas, one soft and one hard, use the hard one only to cut meat, use the soft one for everything else.
Again, its the user not the tools fault, there are tradeoffs when choosing gear, he obviously needed a screwdriver not a knife.
