I've had or nearly had hypothermia on two occasions.
The first was when I swam out to an island in Loch Lomond to stay the night and water leaked into the plastic bag my sleeping bag was in. I had flint and magnesium, but those were back in the days when I thought dry leaves could start a fire, so I was stuck shivering on the uninsulated ground for a night.
The second time is when I was lost in the High Atlas in Morocco. I can comfortably blame my shitty Michelin map for getting me lost in the first place; basically I tried to sleep on a mountain well above the snowline in a 2-season sleeping bag on the bare earth. At four in the morning I packed up and staggered shivering and delirious down the mountain; luckily two old shepherd guys who lived in a sort of cave picked me up, gave me tea, and showed me a five-hour shortcut to the village I'd spent two days hiking from.
