The Ozark Plateau and Boston mountains are what I am most familiar with since that is where I am at.
I have been told that the Quachitas are the same and from the one time I was in them they semed to mirror the plateau.
Hilly terrain with elevation from a few feet above sea level in the ravine bottoms up to around 1100 feet or so above sea level, often this happens quickly.
Absolutely gorgeous scenery in the mountains.
Everything in darker green outside the two mountain ranges is pretty flat, to the southeast is flat and has amazing duck hunting due to the rice fields and other factors. To the far south it goes into swamp fast. The mountain ranges are the best part in my oipinion.
Yes you can always find a spot to pull off and car camp for the night. If you plan on just passing through over the course of a few weeks then it would be fine.
Im very hesitant to encourage car camping as a permament solution due to the distance from reliable work, AGFC and rangers patrolling, and of course due to the amount of people using the forests.
We went out a few years ago on a saturday morning and counted no less than 7 different campsites in a few mile distance. As I said it is very popular and will be hard to find peace and quiet.
I am unsure about the area around the Buffalo national river since I have only floated the river and never really spent uch time around it, maybe it will be different than the Ozark national forest.
