If I say it too soon and they are walking too fast there wont be time to answer if they say something like "nice weather out today" I'll have to turn my head to respond with a "yes sir it is". If I say it too early there is those few seconds of awkward smile as you pretend not to be looking right at them. I don't think anyone else knows either because I've had people walk right past me only saying hi during the point of passing. I've had people say it at that awkward "hold the door open" distance where you have to do the white man jog in order to make them not seem like a retard for holding the door open for someone who was essentially across the street.
