the best/cheapest compromise I could come up with (with readily available parts) was to use a npt-ght adapter, a hose shutoff valve with a filter, and the 1/4" drip line adapter
I did raise the bucket up about a foot to help the flow, and I opted for a brass npt adapter over plastic for durability; if the bucket gets brittle, it can easily be replaced
