Some routes are steep enough to require an ice axe, other routes might require tools, and virtually every route is high enough angle that you want 12 point crampons or 10 point with French technique. And then above treeline there's so much fucked up mixed ground with rhime covered rockfields and snow pockets in between rocks just ready to vacuum your foot in and fuck your ankle up. The whole Presidential range is super fucked up above treeline in winter. I love it.
A winter ascent of Katahdin has me drooling. I'd love to do the knife edge in winter.
