Can any one tell me what this monstrosity is? My cousin and I found this head in an Antique store in Maine a couple years ago, since we have no real use for an ax of this size, we slapped that red lacquered normal sized handle on it for shits and giggles.
I'm guessing it's like at lest 8lb, and really just looks like an absurdly over sized felling ax. No maker marks that we have found, but the inside of the eye had some welding in it, I almost thought it was just made out of a lump of mild steel, but it is tempered and feels as hard as the average antique store ax does on the stones.
It's been abused for sure, besides the welding, the poll has hammer marks and is mushroomed from driving wedges, the underside of the heel has hammer marks on it as well. It had full retard thicc geometry, and the edge looked like it was used to break rocks, but I have thinned and removed the edge damage since pic related.
I'm tempted to call it a splitting ax, but it's heavier than most mauls I've used, and besides it's thick geometry and massive size, it looks like a felling ax.
For referance, the ax bellow it is a 2 1/4lb Hults Bruk Kalic, below that is a 1 3/4 lb S&N Hudson Bay, and the bottom is a CRKT Woods Chogan.
