You follow the Quinault and then the Elwha rivers (or the other way around depending on where you start) so you're always near water. there's also some high altitude lakes near the mid point of the trail at the low divide which you can fish and swim in. When I hiked it a few years ago there was invasive Brooke trout that you could keep from the lakes which is a rare example of being able to actually catch a little food in a national park. its about 50 miles, near both trail heads you'll run into day hikers but after a few miles they'll disappear
