>>1674625Since it is in the Solanaceae family it more than likely is bitter when unripe or partially unripe and will have a tomato-like flavor depending on how ripe it is. You can probably pick them when ripe then leave them in a bowl on the counter or in the fridge for a week and they will change flavor to be sweeter and less tomato-like. Most all non-tomato nightshades are like that.
The wild ground cherries in my area taste like tomatoes when their skins are fully ripe, but lose that flavor and become berry-like and sweet after a few frosts have gone by and their lantern husk looks like a screen (example pic, but mine are bright yellow instead of red).
My tomatillos are similar, but don't get very sweet or anything. They are mostly for tart and their different flavor in Mexican dishes.
