There are no hominids or apes in the fossil record of the entire Western Hemisphere save for migratory humans that appear within the last 15,000 years. There is no evolutionary history that would suggest the natural occurrence of a large non-human ape this side of the Atlantic. The stories surrounding bigfoot are also absurd often times, like regular claims that it has "glowing eyes". Reflective layers in the eye are known as tapetum lucida and are absent in all haplorhine primates (humans, apes, and monkeys).
It's all just nonsense that superstitious people cling to in a rapidly secularizing America so that they can force themselves to believe that "there's more to life than meets the eye". Humans are very drawn to the idea of the unknown, and the faithless modern American is terrified by the idea of the mundane life they live.
